As we celebrate 7 years at LiveFIT I felt this was a great time to share the story of how LiveFIT came to life.
I’ve always loved being active. When I was young, single and broke I joined an inexpensive gym. I hated going home to my apartment at night with nothing to do. Working out was my therapy! Years later, with the encouragement of my sister in law, I became certified to teach group fitness and the journey began. To be honest, I was scared to death to speak in front of a group, let alone lead a group workout. However, it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with teaching classes. I jumped in head first getting any certification and training on whatever I could get my hands on. I had a full time job in a corporate setting and taught early morning, evening and weekend classes to keep my passion alive!
When my youngest child was 2, the company I worked for went through an acquisition giving me an opportunity to home with my babies. It allowed me to do more of what I love – teach more classes! After many years as a group fitness instructor, my husband (at the time) and I decided to buy a business. He quit his job and I quit teaching group fitness after 13 years.
Have you ever felt knocked off of your feet by the unexpected? A few weeks into running our new business, we discovered there was a tax lien on the business and we had to close the doors. We had a mess on our hands. Even bigger, we needed jobs.
One of the beauties I learned through this was: instead of allowing the unexpected point you to your weaknesses – let them point you to your strengths. Find the blessing. The beauty from ashes. I had to cling to the reminder that trials are working good in us we cannot get any other way.
I didn’t want to go back to a corporate job. Fitness was my true passion!
I did some research and put together the plan to start an outdoor bootcamp in my
hometown of Arlington, TN. I had no money to invest into the business so I taught those first classes using a few things such as cones, paper plates and such.
I spread the word on Facebook that I was hosting a free week of bootcamp classes. I hoped and prayed that someone would show up and give me a chance! In 5 days I taught 9 free classes and had a great turnout! So in August of 2011, LiveFIT Bootcamp was born! I did all of my own marketing, website work, taught all of the classes and met lots of new people. I’ve never worked harder in my life. I had lived in Arlington since I was 11 yrs old, yet it was truly exciting to meet so many new people that I would not have the opportunity to know otherwise.
This was a whole new experience for me. I had the opportunity to truly get to know these people. Not just know their faces but know their stories. I love that. The wonderful people who are a part of LiveFIT have allowed a tight knit community to grow.
I added my first instructor, Amy Riccadelli, weeks later and then within 6 months added Amy McDaniel and Wendy Quinn to the team. Today LiveFIT is comprised of a group of over 25 amazing individuals who teach classes, help run the business, personal train and
more. God has placed some amazing people in my path and used them in some really special ways.
Over the years, LiveFIT has far exceeded my expectations. It’s overwhelming to sit back and take it all in. It’s so abundantly clear how God has worked out the details.
Owning a business is so much more work than I realized. I feel the responsibility of looking after two “families” and three “homes”. It’s fulfilling but quite a challenge. As I have gone through growing pains and learned lessons the hard way, I’ve learned so much about myself.
LiveFIT Studio opened in June 2014 allowing us to expand our class offerings to more than just bootcamp and TRX! We now offer a variety of over 60 weekly classes for all ages and abilities!
My job allows me to pour into others. It feels good to make an impact. I am so thankful to be a small part of a beautiful story about God’s grace, fullness and joy. The best compliment I can hear is not about how hard a workout was but how someone felt comfortable coming to a class.
Let me tell you, I am far from having it all together. I fail on a daily basis at one thing or another. It’s a struggle to balance being a business owner, mother, daughter, friend and more but God doesn’t promise to make it easy. He promises it will be worth it.
Why do I feel it’s important to share this story? Because I need you to know how we are alike in so many ways. You and I.
Often when things don’t turn out as we expected, we spotlight our weaknesses don’t we? Can you relate? My child rebels – I am a terrible mom. If the situation stinks – I stink as a person. A relationship fails in my life – I’m a failure. Even now – if a business decision I make doesn’t turn out like I expected, I believe it’s because I’m not smart enough or business savvy enough to have done the right thing.
That is when God reminds me that I need HIM!! There are times I’m overwhelmed or scared – it’s a lot of responsibility to have a business. There are a lot of parts to running this that I’m not good at and I don’t like to do. And that is the perfect opportunity to lean in to God.
Back in August of 2011, I can recall thinking, “if I can just make it a year I won’t feel like a failure”. I didn’t believe in the potential I had inside of me. Just like many of you. That is why I am so passionate about shining a light on what YOU are capable of.
You have a story. We all do. You are not here on this earth to live a lifetime lost without a purpose. I urge you to dream big, bold, beautiful dreams that are built around your calling.
God has placed something in you for the good of the world. Believe your present is not all that is possible.
